Hey there, my fellow homebodies! It looks like we've all been used to being sentenced to house arrest for a little while. And boy, has it thrown our daily routines out of whack! The habits that kept us sane have been replaced with an endless stream of Netflix and takeout for almost 2 years. But, fear not! It's not all doom and gloom. This topsy-turvy world of ours also has presented us an opportunity to create some new, healthy habits. Now that we are not forced to be locked up anymore, why not start taking care of ourselves? Because let's be real, who else is going to do it?

To get to that healthy place, you need to create a space for wellness in your home. Experts call this a "habit loop." It's basically a fancy way of saying that your environment can trigger a behaviour without you even thinking about it. So, create a space that will encourage you to give back to yourself each day. Remember that movie "Field of Dreams" with Kevin Costner? "If you build it, they will come." So, let's build it, folks!

Here are some tips to get you started:

  1. SET AN INTENTION Before you start building your wellness space, set an intention for what you want to achieve in this space. Do you want to feel zen AF? Do you want to be more flexible than a gymnast? Or do you just want to find a place where you can scream into a pillow without your neighbours calling the cops? Whatever your intention is, let it guide you as you create your space.

  2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT LOCATION Figure out what kind of wellness activity you want to do in your space. Yoga? Meditation? Journaling? Painting? Pick a spot in your home that's most suited to your activity. And if you're lucky enough to have an outdoor space, use it! Nothing beats downward dog in the fresh air.

  3. ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS This is your space for alone time, so don't let anyone or anything ruin it for you. Get rid of any distractions, like your phone, laptop, or screaming children (just kidding...sort of). This is a time for you to focus on one thing and one thing only. So, make it count!

  4. NATURAL ELEMENTS Bring a little bit of nature into your space. Plants not only add life and beauty to a room, but they also purify the air. And if you're stuck indoors, a beautiful landscape photo or a botanical print can do the trick.

  5. USE MOOD LIGHTING Harsh lighting can be a buzzkill, so create a soothing atmosphere with some mood lighting. If you're lucky enough to have natural light, filter it with a curtain or blind. And if not, invest in some soft lighting that complements your activity.

  6. STIMULATE THE SENSES Don't forget to engage all of your senses! Aromatherapy, white noise machines, and soothing teas can all enhance your experience and reinforce your habit.

Creating a wellness space is not just the beginning of your journey to self-care. But it's a damn good start! And remember, we're all in this together. So, let's build our spaces, get our zen on, and make our homes a place of peace!
